Sun and skin: the risks you don't know about (and how to protect yourself naturally)

🌞 The Dangers of the Sun: Much More Than Just a Sunburn

Sunburn and its Degrees

A sunburn is not trivial — it's a skin burn caused by overexposure to UVB rays:

  • 1st degree: redness, warmth, slight pain. Skin peels after a few days. Benign but repeated, it permanently weakens the skin.
  • 2nd degree superficial: blisters, intense pain, swelling. Requires appropriate care.
  • 2nd degree deep: destruction of deep layers of the skin, risk of permanent scars.
  • 3rd degree: rare but possible with extreme exposure, total destruction of the epidermis.

⚠️ A single severe sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of melanoma in adulthood.

Accelerated Skin Aging

UVA rays — which pass through glass and clouds — penetrate deep into the dermis. They degrade collagen and elastin. It is estimated that 80% of visible skin aging is caused by the sun, not by age itself.

The Risk of Skin Cancer

In France, melanoma is the cancer with the fastest rising incidence. Excessive and repeated UV exposure is the main avoidable cause.

⚗️ The Hidden Risks of Conventional Sunscreens

Most commercial sunscreens contain suspicious chemical UV filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate) and parabens, endocrine disruptors detected in blood and breast milk. They also destroy coral reefs.

👉 At Âme Sauvage, our formulas are 100% paraben-free, free of suspicious chemical filters, and free of nanoparticles. We only use non-nano zinc oxide.

✅ Best Practices for Effective Sun Protection

  • Apply 20 to 30 minutes before exposure
  • Sufficient quantity: about 35ml for an adult in a swimsuit
  • Reapply every 2 hours and after each swim
  • Avoid exposure between 12 PM and 4 PM
  • SPF 50+ is mandatory for children up to 12 years old

🌿 Plants: Allies for Natural Sun Protection

Karanja oil, aloe vera, Tahitian monoi, immortelle, and jojoba oil are among the most effective plant active ingredients for protecting, nourishing, and repairing sun-exposed skin.

How Does a Mineral Filter Work?

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a so-called physical or mineral filter: it forms an opaque screen on the skin's surface that reflects and scatters UV rays, unlike chemical filters which absorb them and convert them into heat. Its spectral coverage is broad: it protects against both UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (280–320 nm), making it one of the most comprehensive filters available.

In its non-nano version (particles > 100 nm), it remains on the skin's surface without significant skin penetration — a point confirmed by ANSM and ECHA.

UVA, UVB, UVC: What Are the Differences?

  • UVC (100–280 nm): absorbed by the ozone layer, do not reach the skin
  • UVB (280–320 nm): responsible for sunburn and skin cancer, only reach the epidermis
  • UVA (320–400 nm): penetrate the dermis, responsible for photoaging and deep DNA damage. Present all year round, even on cloudy days.

SPF: What the Number Really Means

The Sun Protection Factor measures a product's ability to protect against UVB only. An SPF 50 means it takes 50 times longer to get a sunburn than with bare skin — in theory. In practice, the amount applied is often insufficient (tests are performed at 2 mg/cm², much more than most people apply).

UVA protection is indicated by the UVA in a circle logo on the packaging — check for its presence, as it is not included in the SPF.

Photoaging: What Science Says

A study published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology (Flament et al., 2013) estimated that 80% of the visible signs of facial skin aging are attributable to cumulative sun exposure, not chronological aging. UVA induces the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) which degrade collagen and elastin in the dermis, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and pigment spots.
