Do you know Annatto? This orange-tinged seed, used for centuries by Amazonian indigenous peoples, is now one of the most promising cosmetic active ingredients for revealing your skin's natural radiance. Discover why we've chosen to make it the heart of our Amou'Roucou range.
What is Annatto?
Annatto (Bixa orellana) is a tropical shrub native to South America and the Caribbean, now cultivated in many tropical regions of Africa and Asia. It can reach 3 to 8 meters in height and produces magnificent pink flowers, followed by thorny, bright red capsules containing dozens of seeds covered in an intense orange pulp.
It is precisely this pulp that concentrates Annatto's cosmetic treasures: bixins and norbixins, lipo- and water-soluble carotenoids unique to this plant, as well as beta-carotenes, the same protective pigments found in carrots or mangoes.
The name "Annatto" comes from the word uruku in the Tupi language, spoken by the indigenous peoples of Brazil. They used seed paste to:
- Protect themselves from the sun and insects
- Adorn themselves during ritual ceremonies
- Treat certain skin conditions
- Color their food and textiles
In Europe, Annatto is also well known as E160b, a natural food coloring used in butter, cheese (like Mimolette!), and certain margarines.
The exceptional richness of Annatto in cosmetics
What distinguishes Annatto from most plant active ingredients is the diversity and concentration of its bioactive compounds:
Carotenoids (bixin and norbixin)
Unique to Annatto, these pigments are powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals responsible for premature skin aging.
Beta-carotenes
Precursors to vitamin A, they participate in the natural renewal of skin cells and contribute to a more even and luminous complexion.
Vitamin E (tocopherols)
Naturally present in the seeds, it strengthens antioxidant action and helps nourish and protect the skin barrier.
Essential fatty acids
The oil extracted from Annatto seeds is rich in oleic and linoleic acid, fatty acids that deeply nourish the skin and strengthen its natural hydrolipidic film.
The benefits of Annatto for the skin
- Illuminates and evens out the complexion — carotenoid pigments provide a natural, golden glow
- Protects against external aggressions — pollution, UV, oxidative stress
- Nourishes and softens — fatty acids strengthen the skin barrier
- Contributes to a more even complexion — by promoting natural skin renewal
- Soothes — traditional soothing properties reported by ethnobotanical studies
