Anti-insect essential oils: what science says

Huiles essentielles anti-insectes : ce que dit la science - D.Crouzet

Nature, the best ally against insects

For millennia, plants have produced aromatic compounds to protect themselves from insects. These same molecules, concentrated in essential oils, are now being studied by the scientific community as natural alternatives to synthetic chemical repellents.

How do essential oils work against insects?

Essential oils (EOs) act against insects in two main ways: by repelling them (repellent effect) or by eliminating them (insecticidal effect). Their effectiveness relies on their volatile compounds — terpenes, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aldehydes — odorous molecules naturally produced by plants for defense.

1. Olfactory repulsion: jamming insects' radar

Insects locate their prey using a highly developed olfactory system: their antennae detect CO₂, lactic acid, and body heat. EOs release volatile molecules (citronellal, linalool, eucalyptol, geraniol) that either mask these signals or saturate the insects' olfactory receptors. The result: disoriented, they can no longer find their target.

2. Insecticidal action: direct toxicity

In direct contact or at high concentrations (not used in practice), EOs can:

  • Disrupt the nervous system: inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), modulation of GABA receptors, blockage of sodium channels → hyperexcitation or paralysis
  • Damage the cuticle: liposoluble oils dissolve the protective waxy layer of the exoskeleton → dehydration (particularly effective on soft-bodied insects: aphids, whiteflies)
  • Block respiratory tracts (spiracles)
  • Interfere with growth: effect on juvenile hormones, inhibition of egg laying or hatching

The most effective essential oils

🍋 Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus)

One of the most studied. Its citronellal effectively masks human odors and disorients mosquitoes.

🌿 Lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) — PMD

Its active derivative, p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), is one of the most powerful natural repellents, recognized by the American CDC against disease-carrying mosquitoes.

💜 True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Its linalool acts as a sensory disruptor. Effective against mosquitoes and sandflies.

🌸 Bourbon Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Rich in geraniol and citronellol, particularly effective against Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito), increasingly present in France.

🌾 Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

Rich in citral, it offers effective protection for 2 to 3 hours against several mosquito species.

Real effectiveness: what you need to know

  • Repulsion: good to very good for short durations (30 min to 2-3 hours depending on concentration and volatility). Regular reapplication is necessary.
  • Insecticide: varies depending on the EO, concentration, and insect. More effective in direct contact or in formulation (spray, emulsion).
  • Less persistent than chemical repellents (DEET, IR3535), but more ecological and versatile.

Usage tips

  • Always dilute in a vegetable oil, alcohol, or emulsifier before applying to the skin
  • Test on a small area (risk of irritation)
  • Use in diffusers or on textiles for ambient repulsion
  • Supplement with other measures: mosquito nets, elimination of standing water...
